About Netherlands Antilles

The Netherlands Antilles consist of two island groups in the Caribbean Sea- one includes Curacao and Bonaire north of Venezuela; the other inclusive of Saba, Sint Marteen and Sint Eustatius, is east of the Virgin Islands.

The five islands of the Netherlands Antilles total 960 sq km and are divided geographically into the Leeward Islands (northern) group (Saba, Sint Eustatius and Sint Maarten) and the Windward Islands (southern) group (Bonaire and Curacao).

Mainstays of the economy include tourism, petroleum refining, and offshore finance. The islands enjoy a high per capita income and a well-developed infrastructure. Almost all consumer and capital goods are imported from the United States and Mexico. Poor soils and inadequate water supplies hamper the development of agriculture.
