Governance
Since its initial presence in 1961, UNDP has been partnering with the
Government of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago as it seeks to create
an effective and efficient democratic response to nation building.
During 2004-2006, UNDP provided assistance to the “Vision
2020” planning process by providing advisory services through
participation on national technical sub-committees on
Poverty, Democratic Governance, Environment, HIV and AIDS and Gender.
The
critical importance of democratic governance in the developing world was
highlighted at the Millennium Summit, where world leaders resolved to "Spare
no effort to promote democracy and strengthen the rule of law, as well
as respect for all internationally recognized human rights and
fundamental freedoms, including the right to development."
A
consensus was reached which recognized that improving the quality of
democratic institutions and processes, and managing the changing roles
of the state and civil society in an increasingly globalised world must
underpin national efforts to reduce poverty, sustain the environment,
and promote human development.
UNDP
also finalized the design of a decentralized Social Services Delivery
System in Trinidad and Tobago, which is currently being implemented as a
pilot under the European Union (EU) funded Poverty Reduction Programme.
Additionally, UNDP is assisting with the reform of the Local Government
System for more efficient delivery of goods and services at the regional
level.

Brief Description:
The Development challenge for UNDP Trinidad and Tobago is the
limited overall capacity to fully incorporate a gender
perspective into its work with clients in a consistent and
systematic way. Current efforts are limited to where expertise
and resources are available. Incorporating gender into the
design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of all
policies and programmes should deliver development services that
are more effective and more sustainable. The project is intended
to assist in this delivery through capacity building for staff
and through the development and implementation of a gender
mainstreaming strategy for the country office |
