In Trinidad and Tobago, censuses are taken every ten years in accordance with United Nations recommendations. In 1960, the population of Trinidad was 794,624, this figure rose to 1,208,282 by the time the 2000 Census was taken.

This represented an increase of 413,658 or 52.1% over the forty year period. In the case of Tobago, the 1960 Census revealed that this island had a population of 33,333, the figures from the 2000 census indicated that this figure rose to 54,084, an increase of 62.25 over the period under review.
