According to the available data on annual net migration from 1960 to 1996, Trinidad and Tobago has been experiencing a continual net loss, which means that more emigration out of the country is taking place than immigration into it.
During the thirty-six year period under examination only 1961, 1962, 1963, 1982 and 1983 showed positive net migration. The steepest net migration loss occurred in 1988 when 44,991 more people emigrated than those who immigrated to Trinidad and Tobago.
