The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) held an event on Tuesday 13th December 2011 to share the findings of an Evaluation of its Small Grants Programme and to launch a DVD on the programme. The event was held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Port of Spain and in attendance was representatives from the Government, Diplomatic Community, NGO Sector, Donor Community and other stakeholders.
Special remarks were made by Mr. Calvin James, representing the Minister of the People and Social Development, Dr. the Honorable Glenn Ramadharsingh, Mr. Joseph Fernandes, of the JB Fernandes Memorial Trust Fund, Dr. Marcia De Castro, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative and Ms Grace Talma, Chairperson of the Small Grants Programme National Steering Committee.
The UNDP Small Grants Programme ran from 2003 to 2011 funded by both UNDP and a 3 year grant from JB Fernandes Memorial Trust through Rockefeller Philanthorpy Advisors. UNDP recognised that education and capacity-building are critical elements to sustainable development through poverty reduction; and the programme focused on social development issues, poverty alleviation and entrepreneurship in communities throughout Trinidad and Tobago. Twenty projects were undertaken over the course of 8 years by local community-based organisations and non-governmental organisations focusing on the theme "Healthy Family Functioning".
