Earthquake in Haiti

Donate Now

Haiti is facing a major humanitarian emergency. The earthquake has hit the most densely populated area of the country. Buildings and infrastructure were heavily damaged throughout the capital. Basic services such as water and electricity have collapsed almost entirely. The number of dead or injured, may well be in the thousands. Medical facilities have been inundated with injured. Survivors need emergency shelter. The Government of Haiti has asked the UN to mobilize international resources for the emergency response.

The UN itself has lost many lives in the earthquake. Its main headquarters was destroyed and many staff are unaccounted including the Head of MINUSTAH. The UN has around 3,000 troops and police in and around Port-au-Prince to help maintain order and assist in relief efforts.

In collaboration with key partners, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs is mounting a major relief operation with 3 phases:

Search and Rescue: 15 international search and rescue teams (about 600 people) are deploying to reach people trapped under rubble. Another 12 are on standby. UN engineers are clearing the main roads in Port-Au-Prince to allow assistance and rescuers to reach those in need. In addition, organizations on the ground are providing immediate assistance.

Assessment and Planning: The UN is coordinating multi-sector assessments with experienced aid agencies to identify priority needs and design projects to address them over the next 6 months.

Resource Mobilisation and Emergency Response: The UN will launch the appeal to mobilize resources needed to implement all projects. The UN has released $10 million from the Central Emergency Relief Fund (CERF) to jumpstart operations. There is also an Emergency Relief Response Fund (ERRF) for Haiti managed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Haiti. This fund is used to provide rapid and flexible funding to relief projects. OCHA works with humanitarian organizations in Haiti to direct the funding effectively. It was used to help respond to hurricanes in 2008.
